From Praise to Fury: Right-wing Response to Epstein File Disclosure is Mixed.
Conservative reactions to the limited release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the previous administration highlighting the prominent presence of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while others lamented how extensive redactions cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Justice Department officials justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the public about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the censorship process.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While the former president's identity and likeness appear in portions of the documents, the widespread black blocks prompt significant questions about what may be hidden beneath them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded greater transparency.
“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the statute, and implied that a subsequent Congress may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s document release grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the letter of the act,” he added.
Some Conservative Figures Rally Behind the Disclosure
However, some rightwing commentators and Trump loyalists swung firmly in support of the administration.
The release—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are completely censored, and numerous of the men shown in photographs have their identities obscured.
Yet some do not, featuring prominent figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed certain conservative figures to launch the attack.
“It’s pretty ironic how the Democrats wrongly claimed President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of no criminal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been hiding these files for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and hide permanently. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Muted
However, overall comment on the political right was relatively muted following the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous calls for action that preceded the congressional approval to enact a law mandating the documents' release.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a full disclosure. In February, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were given physical folders of materials that contained little new information.
